In the last part we discussed the dark web, deep web and surface web. Today I will discuss the dark web in particular. For those who missed the last part, here is the dark web section again.
The dark web
Many people think it is something outside the world wide web (www) . That is a myth. The dark web exists on servers of the world wide web like anything else. Certain things are done on the dark web that are not done on the surface web. It is generally a place for doing illegal work, taking illegal services and buying and selling leaked documents — because on the dark web your identity stays hidden 😉 And the dark web is the best place there is to spend cryptocurrency.
If you read the last part you will know what the deep web is: the part search engines generally cannot get into. Nor can all people, until they are given access. Entry is restricted, in other words.
The myths about the dark web
1. Go there and you can hack wifi (seriously, many people believe this 😂). 2. You can blow away someone's Facebook account (😑). 3. The police will pick you up the moment you enter. 4. The dark web is outside the ordinary web network.
Clearly the above are mistaken ideas. It is nothing of the sort. Entering the dark web is not even a crime, so long as you do not buy, sell or take anything illegal.
What sort of illegal activity happens on the dark web?
The things that would ordinarily be serious crimes are generally what get done there, so that no trace remains. The activities usually carried out on the dark web:
1. Selling illegal goods, drugs and weapons. 2. Militant activity. 3. Hiring hackers. 4. Exchanging currency. 5. Cloning and scamming. 5. Illegal pornography (+ buying and selling celebrity scandals 🐸) 7. Social media (Facebook included 😎) 8. Buying and selling files of state or international importance. And so on
Naturally, not one of the eight activities above is anything we should need. So we have no need to enter the dark web either. Even so, if you go in out of your own curiosity there is nothing to fear. Nobody will arrest you. You will get plenty of security even if you do something illegal 😉
How do you get in?
To get into the dark web you can use Tor or I2P. From the Tor browser you can go to various sites. Just as we normally use domains like .com and .net, there it is .onion।
There, as an alternative to Google, you have DuckDuckGo. It is a pretty good search engine, because unlike Google it will not trace you at every turn. So you can breathe a little easier. And you can use Facebook on the dark web if you want to. I have never logged into Facebook from the dark web (I have never needed to) — I have only looked around.
And yes: before entering the dark web, connect to a VPN first. What is a VPN? A VPN is a Virtual Private Network. A very useful thing. We will discuss it another day, insha'Allah.
The thing is, I got in and I bought — but how do I pay? Hmm, good question. Having bought through all that security, you will hardly show the audacity of paying by bank cheque and giving away your own identity. In that case you will naturally use cryptocurrency. You can do plenty of shopping with Bitcoin.
The various sites on the dark web each have their own address. They are not made of nice words like those on the normal web, but of random letters, so that nobody can get in without knowing them.
