A rumour and a misconception are spreading on social media that Facebook will be renamed Meta. That is entirely wrong. What has actually changed is the name of Facebook, Inc.
Facebook versus Facebook, Inc.
Facebook is an internet-based service provider. Facebook, Inc., by contrast, is a business entity. The Facebook service, along with WhatsApp, Instagram and other companies, previously operated through the Facebook, Inc. company. In essence the company is moving from the world of two-dimensional screens towards a three-dimensional world, and towards virtual and augmented reality. It is with that goal that Facebook is going to build the metaverse — and it is from that metaverse that the name Meta was chosen.
